When William Simon, from Hermantown, Wisconsin settled in Norton Township of Winona County, he realized his rural neighbors needed to be able to insure their property against loss. He gathered together 20 other farmers at the Winona County Courthouse and elected the first officers of the new company. Rollingstone Mutual Fire Insurance Company was permanently organized on May 25, 1883 with $125,000 of insurance in force. William Simon was elected President with John Kohner as Secretary and Bernard Bollman as Treasurer. The company operated only in Winona County and sold fire and lightning coverages only.
After World War 1, the land prices in the area first skyrocketed and then plummeted in value and then the Great Depression of the 1930's was upon the country, creating many concerns for the company. A reinsurance policy was taken out by the company to help in the event of a large loss and arrangements were made with all the fire departments in the company's writing territory to respond to fires involving property insured by the company.
By the 100th anniversary of the company, insurance in force had increased to $248,469,600.00. Besides fire and lightning coverage, the company now offered coverage for theft, vandalism, collision and overturn of farm machinery, glass breakage, fire department service and many perils pertaining to livestock.
In March of 1994, the company moved to its new location on Main Street in Lewiston, Minnesota. On January 1, 2001 the company merged with Rochester Farmers Mutual Insurance Company to form Southeast Mutual Insurance Company.
